Gria Vathra in Samothraki
Samothraki, the island of water. Not just of the sea that surrounds it, but of the streams and waterfalls that run through it.
No fewer than 61 streams crisscross the island, flowing from the Aegean’s tallest mountain, Mount Saos, and creating a lush, wet landscape unlike anywhere else in Greece. Before these streams meet the sea, they form countless natural waterfalls and pools, known locally as vathres. These water basins, sculpted by centuries of flow, are one of the island’s most enchanting attractions—natural plunge pools ideal for swimming, refreshing the body and soul alike.
One of the most famous vathres on the island is Gria Vathra, a complex of small waterfalls and crystal-clear pools, just outside Therma village. Surrounded by thick vegetation and constant humidity, the place feels like a different world. The path to it begins in Therma and starts out easy, leading walkers into the forested heart of Samothraki.
From Forest Trail to Hidden Pools
The first part of the hike is relatively easy and accessible. Within minutes, you reach the first and second pools, perfect for a cool dip and shaded by ancient plane trees. The air is heavy with the scent of wild mint, ferns, and chaste trees, and dragonflies trace circles above the water.
To reach the third vathra, you must swim across the second. From here on, the terrain becomes more demanding, and only those with good physical condition or a local guide continue. The climb is challenging, but the reward is remarkable.
You’ll need to scramble up a steep, smooth rock to find a shallow basin with a waterfall acting like a natural jacuzzi. Above it lies another deep vathra, accessible via a thick rope tied to a plane tree. Some dive in, others climb slowly and float quietly. The deeper you go, the more remote it feels—a true spa in nature.
A Chain of Hidden Wonders
In total, the Gria Vathra stream is believed to hold over 60 plunge pools, ranging from wide, shallow basins to deep, enclosed emerald ponds. Reaching the uppermost pools is a challenge. Some parts of the trail require you to step through water, others demand climbing slippery rocks. All the while, you're surrounded by a wild symphony of chirping cicadas and rustling leaves.
The vegetation is rich and diverse—oleanders, ferns, plane trees, and small flowering herbs line your way. You’ll find spots to pause, breathe, and soak it all in. It’s a place where exercise meets tranquility, and adventure leads straight into the arms of healing water.
At the End of the Trail
After your descent, your body may be tired but your spirit will feel renewed. And what better way to close the experience than with a hearty meal at one of the nearby tavernas in Therma? Cold spring water, fresh goat cheese, and grilled fish round out this natural spa day the Samothraki way.
